Understanding Fidya & Kaffarah: Fulfilling Your Charitable Duties in Ramadan

In Islam, two forms of charitable compensation—Fidya and Kaffarah—address the inability to observe fasts during Ramadan.

The Quran reminds us: “…for those who can fast with hardship, is a ransom, the feeding of a person in need…” (Quran 2:184)

What Are Fidya and Kaffarah?

  • Fidya is for those unable to fast due to valid reasons such as illness, pregnancy, or old age, who also cannot make up the missed days later. It provides essential meals to those in need.
  • Kaffarah is required when a fast is deliberately missed or broken without a valid reason. The compensation is significantly higher—feeding 60 people per missed fast—emphasizing the seriousness of the obligation.

How to Calculate Fidya and Kaffarah

Fidya: $10 USD per missed fast = Feeds one person two meals or two people one meal each.
Kaffarah: $600 USD per missed fast = Feeds 60 people.
